Seven ways to build your non-fiction author platform

As a non-fiction author, you are writing to share your ideas and expertise with the world, or at least your tribe, not for personal consumption. To achieve this, it is recommended that you have an online platform. An online author platform is simply a web space where (potential) readers of your book(s) can get to know you, purchase your book(s) and also stay informed of your activities and projects. Your platform is a place to engage, interact, and connect with your audience.

Here are seven ways you can build a platform:

1. Create a website

This is the beginning and most foundational part of establishing your author platform. All your ideas and interactions need a home to flow through and from.

2. Maintain or create a social media account or more

You don’t need to have accounts on all social media outlets, but one or two accounts can keep you connected to your audience.

3. Establish a mailing list

One way for you as an author to market your books and measure your progress in terms of book or course sales and expand your audience is through an email list.

4. Write and publish articles

Having a personal blog on topics you are an authority on, and which interest your audience, will help ensure continuity on your part and commitment from your audience. You can also write for platforms that accept and publish works in your field.

5. Have giveaways

You can publish a free eBook or run a free training seminar where people can access a bit of your expertise. This is one way to get the attention of new readers and keep the attention of your loyal ones.

6. Book or host speaking engagements

Speaking at events is one of the best ways to establish your expertise to newer audiences. You can speak for free at bookshops, libraries, zoom conference calls, and live events or workshops hosted by others to get more recognition as an author.

7. Be social

Engage with other authors by liking, commenting, and even collaborating with them. Do not be a loner.

Whether you launch with a website, social media accounts, or blog, what is important is to just begin. The most essential aspect of being an author is learning how best to connect with those who need your expertise, and getting paid for it.
