Parents are typically concerned about their children studying for exams. And that is a great thing. However, many parents do not see the value of the child writing a story or even journaling. The ultimate achievement for parents is the grades and casual writing does not quite cut it.
But here are some reasons why parents should give independent writing more attention.
1 Writing is an essential job skill. (Nonfiction or copywriting)
Writing is a soft skill that is not going anywhere soon. Jobs require reporting on all levels. So, no matter how low or high your child is in a corporate organisation, a level of writing will be required. If you do something as simple as sending messages or emails on your phone, you know that if one is not skilled at expressing oneself in words, miscommunication is inevitable. Learning how to write politely and transfer the actual emotion intended via text is essential for survival in a corporate environment. You do not have the benefit of facial expressions when you send emails. You must learn how to convey the emotion or intention articulately.
2 Writing helps build creative thinking. (Fiction writing)
Children who do creative writing are learning how to invent ideas and express themselves. Creative writing is a wide door that they can step through to create worlds that surpass what reality can offer. Just as a child expresses himself through drawings, One can express a lot through writing.
3 Writing is therapeutic (Journaling)
Journaling is a sadly overlooked writing skill that can help children to decompress and express themselves. Writing one’s thoughts helps to organise the person and can help with putting things in perspective. Reading what one has written can help the child remember the resolutions made based on several incidents in the past.
So, do not hold your child back. Let them write. For an opportunity to help your children learn from seasoned authors and hone their writing skills, register them for the Young Writers BootCamp (YWBC). It is FREE to join, but registration is required. Register your child here today.
